5 phrases you say when you want to get your salary increased.
Not everyone knows how to talk about salaries with the boss. Here I would like to give you phrases you definitely should not use.
- You don't appreciate me enough.
Specialists call such phrase hidden accusations. Nobody, including your boss, doesn't like to be blamed or criticized. Keep calm and talk in neutral form, plan your speech in advance and exclude all similar accusations.
- She got more than I did, but I work more.
First of all, you don't see the whole picture. You don't know another person’s experience and the amount of work your colleague actually did. You again tell the boss something like "You don't appreciate me enough" and that is a bad idea (see point 1).
- If you don't increase my salary, I will quit.
Ultimatums are never a good idea. You put your opponent to a situation where he wants to win and it might be not a good option for you, especially if you didn't find another job in advance. Besides, when you start talking about raising the salary, first of all, your boss thinks what company will lose if you quit. So, your ultimatum is pointless.

Be careful with sums. Sometimes your boss might have less salary than you want to have. It would be better to talk without specific sums or at least make research on what you can expect according to your experience and knowledge.
