There are different kinds of people around you. Some people are really passionate about their lives while some others frame themselves in a status quo. Some people really love their comfort zone while some others always try to challenge themselves going beyond their comfort zones. I already told you, there are different kinds of people. It depends on their own nature and more importantly, their mind-set. But how much can an ordinary man achieve? This can be an interesting question to discuss.
I will tell you the story of an ordinary man. He was 21 years old when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Because of ALS, he became physically and mentally disabled. He was informed that he would not survive for more than 2 years. But, this man who could only speak less than 10 words a minute wrote one of the bestselling books of all time. His book revolutionized the world of science and reasoning. He lived 55 more years after the age of 21. You know this man of honour, Stephen Hawking
“My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21. Everything since then has been a bonus.”
You don’t how much you can achieve until you are overburdened with extreme circumstances, until you are tested to your limits. Your inabilities and disabilities are mere excuses. There are multiple examples of people who have done things that ordinary people consider to be some sort of miracles.
Károly Takács, an army man from Hungary was also the world’s best shooter of ‘men’s 25m rapid fire pistol category’. He was preparing for 1940s Olympic when he lost his right-hand due to a hand grenade explosion. All his dreams were shattered. After one month of hospitalization, he decided to train himself with his left hand, the hand which he couldn’t even write with. In 1939, he had already won ‘National Pistol shooting championship’. Unfortunately, the Olympics of 1940 and 1944 was cancelled due to World War II. He had to wait until 1948 to win his first Olympic gold medal. He won 1948’s Olympic too at the age of 38.
I am sure you got the answer to this question: How much can a man achieve?
It’s one hundred percent true that we all become what we tell ourselves.
“Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your behavior. Your behavior becomes your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny. So, keep your thoughts positive.”
- Mahatma Gandhi
You may be spending some hours of time with others but you are spending 24 hours a day, 30 months a day and 365 days a year of time with yourself. So, you become the characters of the story that you tell yourself.
We have been told lies. Lies that we can’t achieve anything. You can’t achieve everything that you want but you can definitely become what you are. It doesn’t matter whether people consider you to be successful or a failure. So, understand yourself and act on it. Be in the process and show them the results! You never know how much you can achieve until you test your own limits!
