I have written a dozen articles which encircles the basic idea of ‘living in the present’. I would recommend you to read three articles in this regard which are ‘Talk to yourself’, ‘An act of achieving mindfulness’ and ‘S.T.O.P’.
‘It’s easy said than done’. However, complete insight is needed to bring results in life. Sometimes incomplete knowledge misleads us. So, let’s dig deeper into this specific topic which is about making peace with your own past.
We can’t focus on our present if we can’t let go of your past. So, if you want to be happy with your presence there are certain things you have to know about dealing with the past. You will have to understand how the past holds you back. If you try to avoid your past it will trouble you time and again.
Basically, the past is concerned with either a place or a person which often gives you a nostalgic feeling in life. You are pulled back in life when you feel guilty or ashamed about your activities of the past.
Have you ever felt ashamed for doing certain things in past that you still regret?
Have you felt guilty of not taking actions which you think you should have taken back then?
Take a moment to ask yourself these two basic questions.
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes I am sure your past is still holding you back even if you are trying to push forward. Instead of feeling guilty or ashamed about your past you should make a clear evaluation of your past deeds. You will have to realize what you did wrong in the past and then what lessons you have learnt by doing it, the wrong way. If you talk to yourself this way, I’m sure you will resolve issues with yourself and your past.
As a human being, you are most likely to feel ashamed, guilty or go through similar negative emotions in life. But how often do we rejoice the good things that happened to us in the past? You should recall how happy you were when you achieved something you had aimed. This will boost up your confidence level and self-esteem.
Now, you must have got an insight to deal with your past. However, you can’t achieve success or be happy unless you are feeling well at present. To feel well about your present, you can think about all the good things that are happening around you presently. You can recall the strategies or plan that you had formulated to achieve some long term goals of your life. I am sure you are leaping ahead even if it is slow but you are steadily moving towards it.
When you’re passionate and happy about your present there is no room for your past to come and trouble you, but you must have learnt well from your past. The ultimate decision is your own, whether you want to fill your life with memories of past or the blissfulness of your present?
Let’s end this article with a meaningful quote from Steve Maraboli:
“Letting go isn’t about the courage to release the past; it’s about having the wisdom to embrace your present.”
