The end of October 2018. Christie’s auction.
Portrait of Edmond Belami, the “painting” produced by program code, sold for $432,000.
We think it is worth to tell about the author of the code. This is a student at Stanford University, whose name is Robbie Barrat, he is 19 years old. At the age of 17 he began experimenting with AI. Thanks to Robbie, the computer began to “write” rap after uploading 6000 lines of Kanye West songs.
Then Robbie uploaded thousands of pictures from the Internet to the program - AI became an “artist”. The code has been uploaded to GitHub.
The neural network, which was used by three 25-year-old French students of Obvious, became publicly available. So they found it.
The students had “painted” a whole series of portraits of the fictional Belamy family. The portrait of Edmond Belamy would be the peak of their creations, if not for the participation of the program code, whose author is Robbie Barrat.
That's the story.
